Question: engine sputtered then shortly died

i have a 383stroker sbc with a pete jackson noisy gear drive timing gear with world products s/r torquer 305 heads a 268h comp cam. about 2 months ago the i heard an unusual noise coming from timing cover but only when it was cold, didnt think much of it untill now. the truck was idleing and sputtered once about 10 seconds later i tried to accelerate and the engine just died (did not lock up) i tried to restart and did turn over a very small amount and is now binding on something the engine temperature was normal, oil pressure and oil was good i'm thinking it was either the timing gear that malfunctioned or the cam broke heard things about gear drives that make both sound possible any and all help is appreciated.
